TAGUS RIVER BRIDGE (25TH APRIL)

This work was characterized by the following activities:

  • Structural reinforcement of the bridge including installation of two secondary suspension cables parallel to, and some 3.5m above, existing ones, reinforcing the stress-beams and construction of new exterior anchorage points alongside existing ones on Av. India and on the Tagus river southern embankment.
  • Construction of the twin track railway deck inside the stress beams and respective catenaries as well as all signalling and control systems.
  • Widening of the road deck to six lanes.
  • General improvements to the existing structure including stripping and total repainting.
  • Replacement of existing decorative, traffic and aircraft warning lights.
  • Construction of rail deck under the Alcântara viaduct road deck to support the railway link.
  • General improvement to the road deck on the Alcântara viaduct with removal of some oscillation joints and replacement of others.

Excavations for anchorages foundations: 85 000 m3
Volume of concrete: 85 000 m3
Foundations piling Ø 1,50 m: 3 600 m
Total area painted: 600 000 m2
Dead load of the existing bridge: 36 500 ton
Additional dead load due the installation of the railway deck and the widening of the road deck:  16 000 ton
Horizontal force bearing component installed on the secondary cable and transmitted to each new anchorage point: 49 900 kn
